Higher education dropout in Germany and the gender gap in STEM majors: Is dropout dependent on institutional setting?

Grieb, A. (2016, September).
Higher education dropout in Germany and the gender gap in STEM majors: Is dropout dependent on institutional setting? Paperpresentation at the 3rd BIEN Tagung, DIW, Berlin, Germany.
Abstract

Women are at a higher risk to opt out of STEM majors in higher education. Another gender gap exists with regard to institutional choices. Women decide at higher rates than men to attend traditional universities compared to universities of applied sciences (UAS). Attrition rates are higher at universities. This study aims to examine whether universities and UAS are equally prone to reproduce the gender gap in STEM majors. I utilize prospective panel data from the National Educational Panel Study. I find that a) non-completion is more likely at universities and b) universities are more prone to reproduce the gender gap. Differences exist regarding social and academic integration of women and men between and within institutional settings.
