Summer Schools

DZHW is involved in two Summer Schools in the field of higher education research and science studies. Both summer schools take place annually at different locations in Germany or Europe.

Summer School in Higher Education Research and Science Studies (HERSS)

Due to the current COVID 19 pandemic and the measures taken to contain it, we have devided that, at this point, it is not possible to assess whether an event with international participants at the beginning of September 2020 will create health hazards.
Accordingly, our summer school "Making Theory Work" will be postponed for a whole year and take place from 06th to 10th September 2021.
Please find more information on the HERSS website.

The interdisciplinary Summer School in Higher Education Research and Science Studies (HERSS) is jointly organised by a consortium of higher education research and science studies institutions in Germany and has been taking place since 2015. The summer school office is located at the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW) in Hanover.

The focus topic of the summer school changes annually, since each year one member of the organisers’ consortium hosts the event and consequently, it takes place at different locations in Germany. The school is generously funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Participants will have the opportunity to present their research and take part in additional activities such as workshops or evening lessons. Presenting participants may obtain 5 ECTS credits.

Each year, renowned international experts are invited to give keynote speeches and comment on the participants' presentations and research projects. High ranking representatives of the organisers’ consortium will take part and give advice for young researchers.

Attendees can expect a sound overview of state-of-the-art scientometric methods and the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the most commonly used databases, to learn how to construct relevant indicators and how to interpret the data. Theoretically imparted knowledge will be consolidated in hands-on training events whenever suitable, in order to guarantee a sustainable learning experience.
