Abstract

Since 2001, Wissenschaft weltoffen analyses the internationalisation of higher education and science in Germany and around the world. The compact edition of the annual data report contains the latest internationalisation indicators in a visually appealing format. The indicators presented provide information on mobility rates and countries of origin and destination of internationally mobile students in Germany and abroad. They also relate to researcher mobility to and from Germany as well as internationalisation structures in German higher education. The indicators presented are based on international data published by the OECD and UNESCO, national data from the Federal Statistical Office and the findings of own surveys.

Abstract

For 25 years, Wissenschaft weltoffen has provided a valid basis for monitoring the internationalisation of studies and research in Germany and around the world. Every year, it sheds light on developments relating to international students and researchers in Germany, the mobility patterns of students and researchers from Germany abroad as well as academic mobility patterns worldwide. As of 2024, it also analyses structural aspects of internationalisation, such as university administrative staff, the availability of English-language study programmes, international university partnerships and third-party funding, plus transnational educational programmes.

Abstract

The paper cluster comprises four systematic reviews assessing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on (1) macro-level flows of internationally mobile students, (2) social inequalities in access to, during, and in the wake of study abroad periods, (3) the social and cultural integration of international students, and (4) labour market expectations and experiences of internationally mobile students. Taken together, these reviews provide a comprehensive overview of the state of global research on how the pandemic has influenced several key aspects of ISM, simultaneously highlighting significant heterogeneities in terms of its impact on the different actors involved in ISM, including students, higher education institutions, and governments.
