Summer Schools
DZHW is involved in two Summer Schools in the field of higher education research and science studies. Both summer schools take place annually at different locations in Germany or Europe.
Summer School in Higher Education Research and Science Studies (HERSS)
The 11th HERSS-Summer School with a focus on 'International perspectives on higher education research and science studies: Global citizenships' will take place 28 September to 02 October 2026, in Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Germany). The HERSS Summer School 2026 invites submissions from doctoral candidates and early-career researchers in higher education research and science studies across the globe. Senior researchers are also cordially welcome to participate in the program.

European Summer School for Scientometrics (esss)
The european summer school for scientometrics 2026 will take place from August 31th to September 4th 2026 in Leuven, Belgium. You can find more information on the esss website.
In 2010 the University of Vienna, the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW) and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven joined cooperatively to found the European Summer School for Scientometrics (esss). Since 2017 the EC3metrics Group of the University of Granada has become an official partner, Sapienza Universita de Roma joined in 2022.
esss offers training covering major aspects of quantitative analysis of science and technology and is especially designed for the needs of science policy makers, research quality managers, scientists and information specialists & librarians.
Attendees can expect a sound overview of state-of-the-art scientometric methods and the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the most commonly used data bases, to learn how to construct relevant indicators and how to interpret the data. Theoretically imparted knowledge will be consolidated in hands-on trainings whenever suitable in order to guarantee a sustainable learning experience.
Participants will challenge themselves academically, gain crucial experience, advance their careers and experience knowledge sharing and exchange of ideas with esss staff, lecturers and other participants.
