Science is increasingly expected to help in solving complex societal problems in collaboration with societal stakeholders. However, it is often unclear under what conditions this can happen, i.e., what kind of challenges occur when science interacts with society and what kind of quality expectations prevail. This is particularly pertinent for Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), which are part of the object they study and whose knowledge is always subject to provisionality. Here we discuss how SSH researchers can contribute to societal problems, what challenges might occur when they interact with societal stakeholders, and what quality expectations arise in these arrangements.

The study "StuMa" deals with the causes of dropping out of a master's program and the further professional development after dropping out of a master's program. While there are some data available for undergraduate programs that allow an analysis of possible causes of dropout, there is no suitable database for master's programs. Due to the comparatively low dropout rates in master's programs, dropout in this phase of studies has not yet been perceived as a research topic in higher education research. The Social Survey is a series of surveys on the economic and social situation of students in Germany that has been in existence since 1951. At three- to four-year intervals, a cross-section of students is surveyed on aspects of university access, structural features of study, social and economic situation, including income and cost of living, employment, housing situation, and socio-demographic characteristics such as ethnic and social origin, partnership status and parenthood. The data package includes data from the survey of German, educationally native, and educationally foreign students conducted as part of the 16th Social Survey (2000), that includes a focus on computer use and new media. https://doi.org/10.21249/DZHW:ssy16:1.0.0

What does a university degree lead to? How mobile are graduates? What skills do they have? How high is their affinity for research? Are Bachelor graduates successful in the labour market? What are non-traditional study formats? How heterogeneous are their graduates? Who goes on to further studies or the labour market after graduation? Who earns well? These are just some of the questions addressed in this volume. The data basis of the Nationwide Graduate Panel 2017 (ap2017) was made possible by the cooperation of several research institutes. The numerous results of the joint project are presented in this volume.

In einem systematischen Review werten Nicolai Netz, Svenja Hampel und Valeria Aman 96 empirische Studien zum Einfluss internationaler Mobilität auf wissenschaftliche Karrieren aus. Die Analyse dieses noch jungen, aber in den letzten Jahren sehr dynamischen Forschungsfeldes zeigt, dass internationale Mobilität zum Ausbau wissenschaftlicher Netzwerke beiträgt. Zudem gibt es Hinweise, dass internationale Mobilität die wissenschaftliche Produktivität und Rezeption, das heißt die Anzahl der Publikationen und Zitationen, erhöhen kann. Auch den beruflichen Aufstieg kann internationale Mobilität begünstigen. Sie scheint jedoch ebenso mit durchschnittlich längeren befristeten Beschäftigungsverhältnissen einherzugehen.
