Institutional diversity from a comparative perspective - an overview and insights for Indian higher education.

Williams, J. (2025, Mai).
Institutional diversity from a comparative perspective - an overview and insights for Indian higher education. Vortrag auf dem Seminar Institutional diversity from a comparative perspective - an overview and insights for Indian higher education, Bangalore, Karnataka, India.
Abstract

Institutional diversity: Foundational analysts of higher education systems such as Trow and Clark as well as major policy organisations like the World Bank identify the diversity of higher education providers as a key feature of higher education systems. More diverse systems are seen as better able to meet diverse student needs and achieve efficiencies in higher education delivery. My doctoral work is seeking to build a systematic method for measuring diversity of institutions in higher education systems around the world. This talk would briefly present the relevant literature and the framework I am developing, and then provide reflections on the structure of Indian higher education to identify its commonalities and specificities.

Distinguished Lecture: Demographic declines and higher education - Global insights for Kerala's higher education sector.

Williams, J. (2025, Mai).
Distinguished Lecture: Demographic declines and higher education - Global insights for Kerala's higher education sector. Vortrag auf dem Symposium Distinguished Lecture: Demographic declines and higher education - Global insights for Kerala's higher education sector, Kerala State higher Education Council and the Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi, Kerala, India.
Abstract

Many higher education institutions in Kerala have been witnessing a noticeable decline in student enrolments, potentially fuelled by shrinking youth population and rising migration of students to destinations within India and outside the country. Countries facing similar challenges—such as the United States, Taiwan, South Korea, and Poland—have adapted different approaches to sustain and/or transform their higher education sectors. Kerala can draw valuable insights from these global experiences to adopt international best practices, implement solutions uniquely suited to Kerala's context and develop strategic policy and institutional reforms.

AutoML meets hugging face: Domain-aware pretrained model selection for text classification.

Safikhani, P. (2025, April/Mai).
AutoML meets hugging face: Domain-aware pretrained model selection for text classification. Poster auf der Konferenz 2025 Conference of the Nations of the Americas Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics: Human Language Technologies, Albuquerque, USA.
Abstract

The effectiveness of embedding methods is crucial for optimizing text classification performance in Automated Machine Learning (AutoML). However, selecting the most suitable pre-trained model for a given task remains challenging. This study introduces the Corpus-Driven Domain Mapping (CDDM) pipeline, which utilizes a domain-annotated corpus of pre-fine-tuned models from the Hugging Face Model Hub to improve model selection. Integrating these models into AutoML systems significantly boosts classification performance across multiple datasets compared to baseline methods. Despite some domain recognition inaccuracies, results demonstrate CDDM’s potential to enhance model selection, streamline AutoML workflows, and reduce computational costs.

Smarter research: Integrating AI into CRIS systems.

Schöpfel, J., & Azeroual, O. (2025, April).
Smarter research: Integrating AI into CRIS systems. Vortrag auf dem Workshop AI4CRIS Working Group, April 24th 2025.
Abstract

Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Current Research Information Systems (CRIS) paves the way for smarter, more efficient research ecosystems. In this talk, we highlight how AI can enhance data quality, automate workflows, and offer strategic insights. As part of our initiative, we developed and presented four concrete AI use cases to the AI4CRIS community: metadata enrichment, affiliation disambiguation, automated data validation, and trend analysis in research activities. These use cases demonstrate the potential of AI to transform CRIS into intelligent systems that better serve researchers, institutions, and policymakers.
