Abstract

The Brazilian higher education system is exceptional in several regards. In Trow’s parlance, it has preserved an elite public university system, albeit one with widening efforts to enhance inclusion of students of lower socioeconomic status. Massification has been delegated almost entirely to the private sector, which enrolls some three-quarters of students. Private higher education is predominantly demand-absorbing in the framework of Levy (2024), unusually so within Latin America. The presentation discussed the growth and concentration of private higher education before discussing in depth issues of quality specifically in private medical education.

Abstract

Based on the challenges in recruiting professors at universities of applied sciences, which were identified in 2016 in a BMBF-funded project ‘Bewerberlage bei Fachhochschulprofessuren (BeFHPro)’ (funding code M521900), the lecture systematically examines the question of where conditions have changed here. In particular, legal framework conditions and political programmes will be examined. In a conclusion, the sustainability of the measures and developments will be assessed and open points identified.

Abstract

This presentation outlines selected findings and conclusions from a study that compares and contrasts the 6th Global Survey on Internationalisation of Higher Education by the International Association of Universities (IAU) with findings from the qualitative INDISTRA project which focuses on digital transformation strategies in German higher education. The key topics of this presentation are the main drivers, priorities and challenges associated with virtual internationalization.
