Research Data Centre for higher education research and science studies

Start: 2015-Mar-01

The DZHW has set up a Research Data Centre (Forschungsdatenzentrum, FDZ) in accordance with the German Data Forum (RatSWD)'s criteria. The German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) had often emphasised the need for such a centre both for the DZHW and for higher education research in general, to fill the gaps in the research data infrastructure. The FDZ is already supporting researchers with data access. The FDZ is available to the whole scientific community as a permanent, reliable research infrastructure feature and guarantees transparent access to anonymised microdata using a range of data access paths. The Scientific Use Files comprise an important factor in the transfer of research findings into the scientific community; guest researcher places and remote data use are also available. A website with a meta data portal is also provided in addition to the user service to ensure that the provision is transparent.

During the set-up phase, the project was supported by an external project advisory body staffed by members of the scientific community and other research data centres. The set-up and long-term operation of the FDZ in accordance with RatSWD criteria considerably strengthens the DZHW's service and transfer function in many ways and will comprise a long-term benefit for science.

The Research Data Centre started offering its services for the scientific community in June 2017. You can find more information on the website of fdz.DZHW.

Lang, S., & Klein, D. (2023).
WGTDISTRIM: Stata module to trim extreme sampling weights (version 1.0.0) [Stata-ado]. Hannover: Github.
Abstract

wgtdistrim trims extreme sampling weights using the weight distribution approach suggested by Potter (1990). The reciprocal of the sampling weights are assumed to follow a (scaled) beta distribution. The parameters of the beta distribution are estimated from the sampling weights and the trimming levels (cut-offs) are computed for the specified percentiles. Sampling weights that are more extreme than the specified percentiles are trimmed to these percentiles and the excess is distributed equally among the untrimmed sampling weights so that the sum of the trimmed sampling weights equals the sum of the untrimmed sampling weights. This process is repeated a specified number of times (or until the trimmed sampling weights do no longer change).

Abstract

The 2017 graduate survey is conducted in the context of the DZHW graduate study series, which uses standardized surveys to collect information on the studies, career entry, career path and further qualification of university graduates. The first graduate panel was conducted in 1989, and since then every fourth cohort of graduates has been surveyed. The 2017 graduate survey is the first collaborative project in the context of the DZHW graduate study series. The joint partners DZHW, INCHER, and ISTAT aim to take into account the interests of different user groups as comprehensively as possible. Abstract

The report on the cumulative data set for the 10th-21st Social Survey (1982 - 2016) explains the data preparation process and describes the variables in the data set. The survey series has a unique regional scope, is based on large, random samples, and is thus a powerful source of data for studies of the aspects covered over time. It allows a differentiated examination of students with various characteristics, such as by type of university, university entrance, subject groups, gender, age groups, educational and regional origins, financial situation, living arrangements, partnership status, and parenthood. The report is part of the data package "The Social Profile in the Promotion of the Gifted 2008". The scientific use file contains information on a total of 9,540 recipients of support from the eleven organizations for the promotion of the gifted that existed in Germany in 2008 - including 7,947 recipients of support for studies and 1,593 recipients of support for doctoral studies. In addition to specific questions on the promotion of the gifted, the questionnaire was based on the 18th Social Survey (2006). This allows direct comparison with the population or different student groups, especially on topics such as sociodemographic characteristics, social origin, [...] Full abstract: https://doi.org/10.21249/DZHW:gif2008:1.0.0

Abstract

The research project "Digital Programming in Teams" (DiP-iT) investigates how collaborative learning in computer science studies can be didactically developed and supported with digital tools. The project focuses on the use and implementation of learning analytics methods. The DiP-iT project aims to develop didactic and technical support in computer science studies for learning to program in teams. Abstract

The DZHW-Panel Study of School Leavers 2018 is part of the DZHW-Panel Study of School Leavers survey series, in which standardized multiple surveys are used to collect information on the post-school careers of school leavers with a (school) higher education entrance qualification. As a rule, several survey waves are conducted at different times before and after the acquisition of the higher education entrance qualification. Accordingly, this is a combined cohort-panel design. The panel 2018 is the 21st cohort of the survey series of which the data of the first survey wave will be published first. [...] Full abstract: https://doi.org/10.21249/DZHW:gsl2018:1.0.0

Abstract

The DZHW Graduate Panel 2009 is part of the DZHW Graduate Survey Series, which compiles information on study, career entry, career development and further qualifications of higher education graduates using standardised surveys. The first Graduate Panel was created in 1989. Since then, every fourth graduate year (cohort) has been surveyed. For each graduate cohort, a series of survey waves are carried out, with each wave occurring at differing time intervals following the completion of degree. The DZHW Graduate Panel 2009 comprises the sixth graduate cohort of the survey series. Similar to the 2005 cohort, the study phase of the 2009 cohort is defined by the transformation [...] Full Abstract: https://doi.org/10.21249/DZHW:gra2009:2.0.0

Abstract

With the increased influx of refugees in the years 2014 to 2016, many people seeking protection came to Germany with advanced school qualifications or existing study experience. This resulted in a higher demand for preparatory language and subject courses, which must be completed in order to acquire the formal requirements necessary for admission to study in Germany. Until 2016, there were no scientific findings on the preparation of refugees for university in German-speaking countries. There was also little international research on the topic. The WeGe project therefore explored the topic and developed initial findings on the conditions for successful study preparation.

Abstract

The study "StuMa" deals with the causes of dropping out of a master's program and the further professional development after dropping out of a master's program. While there are some data available for undergraduate programs that allow an analysis of possible causes of dropout, there is no suitable database for master's programs. Due to the comparatively low dropout rates in master's programs, dropout in this phase of studies has not yet been perceived as a research topic in higher education research. Abstract

The DZHW Graduate Panel 2013 is part of the DZHW Graduate Study Series, which uses standardised surveys to gather information on the studies, career entry, career development and further qualification of university graduates. The first Graduate Panel was conducted in 1989, since then every fourth graduate cohort has been surveyed. For each cohort of graduates, several waves of interviews are conducted, each wave taking place at different intervals from the time of graduation. The 2013 Graduate Panel is the seventh cohort of graduates in the study series. Even more than the graduate cohorts of 2005 and 2009, [...] Full abstract: https://doi.org/10.21249/DZHW:gra2013:2.0.0

Abstract

As entry rates in German higher education have grown considerably, student diversity is of particular concern for educational politics. To shed light on the role of diversity for study success, the paper first focuses on a broad range of social, individual, and organizational diversity factors. Furthermore, study success is investigated in terms of how challenging students perceive the formal and informal requirements of the first year in higher education. Drawing on a student survey conducted after the first year of studies, the study then uses multiple linear regression analysis to examine the relationship of diversity and the perception of requirements.
