Rafael hat Sozialwissenschaften (B.A.) und Soziologie (M.A.) an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und der Universität Bielefeld mit Schwerpunkt Quantitative Methoden studiert. Während des Studiums war er unter anderem im Forschungsprojekt "Chancengleich vom Studium in den Beruf?" (HU Berlin), in der Nachwuchsgruppe BOR³ (Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung) und am Lehrbereich Soziale Ungleichheit (Universität Bielefeld) angestellt. Seit April 2023 ist er Doktorand in der Nachwuchsgruppe "Mobilität von Hochqualifizierten" und dort im DFG-geförderten Projekt "Einflüsse räumlicher Mobilität auf die subjektive Lebensqualität" tätig.
