The EUROSTUDENT 8 – Synopsis of Indicators is the central publication of the eighth round of the EUROSTUDENT project and the result of the collaboration of a European-wide network including researchers, data collectors, representatives of national ministries, and other stakeholders. It comprises data from student surveys conducted in 25 countries in the EHEA. Adopting a broad, comparative perspective, the Synopsis of Indicators provides information on students’ socio-economic and study-related backgrounds, their study conditions and experiences, including international mobility, and their living conditions. It aims to inspire policy debates on the topic of the social dimension and lay the ground for further research.

In Germany, only a few international academics have succeeded in gaining access to a university professorship. This is evident on an international scale, but also in comparison with other academic staff at universities. The InWiDeHo research project investigated whether and, if so, which obstacles exist for international academics in the transition from postdoc to professorship. The report presents the core findings and recommendations for action of the qualitative study, for which international postdocs and newly appointed professors as well as members of university management were interviewed as part of expert interviews. Group discussions were also held with university staff.

Individual educational and life paths are far more diverse today than is often assumed. Many paths with and without a university entrance qualification lead to higher education at different points in time. Diversity persists in higher education and beyond. Students have different backgrounds, change their course of study, interrupt their studies, or drop out. The current findings in this anthology impressively explore this diversity, from the paths to a degree program to the labor market.
