Walburga Katharina Freitag studied education and sociology at Bielefeld University and Deakin University, Australia. In 2003 she received her Ph.D. in the sociology of knowledge and of science with a thesis on thalidomide. She has worked as a researcher at DZHW since October 2005 in the fields of Europeanization of higher education, lifelong learning and recognition of prior learning. From 2012 to 2020, she headed the evaluation of the federal-state competition "Advancement through Education: Open Universities". Currently she is responsible for developing an internationalization strategy for the DZHW.
