As entry rates in German higher education have grown considerably, student diversity is of particular concern for educational politics. To shed light on the role of diversity for study success, the paper first focuses on a broad range of social, individual, and organizational diversity factors. Furthermore, study success is investigated in terms of how challenging students perceive the formal and informal requirements of the first year in higher education. Drawing on a student survey conducted after the first year of studies, the study then uses multiple linear regression analysis to examine the relationship of diversity and the perception of requirements.

The DZHW Panel Study: Careers of PhD Holders 2014 is a panel study of the DZHW concerning the careers of doctoral graduates. The study analyses how the formal context as well as the learning and development conditions that PhD graduates experienced during their doctorate studies influence the transition into employment and the further development of their professional career, both within as well as outside academia. The research project reconstructs students' practices in dealing with digital technologies and asks which digital practices exist for their studies. Digital practices are understood to be those in which the use of digital technologies is incorporated. Nacaps, the National Academics Panel Study, is a new longitudinal study of doctoral candidates and doctorate holders in Germany funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project aims at providing nationwide cross-sectional and longitudinal data on doctoral students and doctorate holders in Germany regarding their study conditions as well as their career trajectories within and outside of academia. The Nacaps study series apply a panel design to multiple cohorts. The present study has been conducted as a sub-study of the WiNbus study “Academic Career and Family” within the scope of the project “WiNbus – An Online Panel among Young Academics in Germany” funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The partial study investigated the compatibility of professional career and family life of young academics. The study focused on how conflicts of objectives between professional and private commitment can be managed as well as on the influence of the structures of the academic system on the careers of researchers. Based on an analysis of maximally contrasting cases (institutions of higher education, subjects) it was examined how the change in appointment procedures affects the relation of the participating actors and their enactment of institutional logics. It is a cross-sectional survey that is usually conducted every three years.
