Panel Study of School Leavers with a Higher Education Entrance Qualification 2012

Start of the project: 2011-Jun-01 - End of the project: 2020-Sept-30

The third survey wave of the DZHW’s Panel Study of School Leavers with a Higher Education Entrance Qualification 2012 was carry out from July 2017 to September 2020. It took place six and a half years after the students gained their higher education entrance qualification. This third survey followed a second survey six months after the school leavers gained their qualification (December 2012) and the first survey six months before the school leavers gained the qualification (December 2011).

The third survey wave aimed to analyse the post-school educational and career paths and the realisation of the educational intentions and decisions expressed by the school leavers in the prior waves. To achieve this, detailed information on the structure and monthly progress of the post-school paths of the approx. 11,700 qualified school leaver respondents was acquired, as well as on their attitudes, plans, aims and personal characteristics. 6,120 school leavers took part in the third survey wave.

The third survey of the 2012 cohort of school leavers with a higher education entrance qualification focused on the topics:

  • Educational outcomes
  • Diversity with special focus on migration background

Abstract

This paper focuses on dual qualifications (vocational and academic) and on how they affect social disparities in the probability of going to university. We analyze data from the DZHW Panel Study of School Leavers with a Higher Education Entrance Qualification 2012 to assess whether students find their way into academia via alternative pathways (vocational training) and whether this reduces existing social disparities in their likelihood of studying. This approach allows us to look at the educational pathways and detours to higher education over a more extended time than has been done in earlier studies and to highlight the effect of the timing of vocational training. On the one hand, our results confirm earlier findings ...

Abstract

The DZHW-Panel Study of School Leavers 2012 is part of the DZHW-Panel Study of School Leavers survey series, in which standardized multiple surveys are used to collect information on the post-school careers of school leavers with a (school) higher education entrance qualification. As a rule, several survey waves are conducted at different times before and after the acquisition of the higher education entrance qualification for each year group of persons with a university entrance qualification. Accordingly, this is a combined cohort-panel design. The panel 2012 is the 19th cohort of the study series with currently two waves. [...] Full abstract: https://doi.org/10.21249/DZHW:gsl2012:2.0.0
