Emanuel Kulczycki is head of the Research Area “Research System and Science Dynamics” at DZHW. He also holds the W3 Professorship in Science Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
He received his habilitation in philosophy from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań in 2016 and his doctoral degree in philosophy from the same institution in 2011. He studied philosophy and communication at Adam Mickiewicz University and has held professorial positions in philosophy (Adam Mickiewicz University) and computer science (West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin). Before joining DZHW in February 2026, from 2016 to January 2026, he led the Scholarly Communication Research Group at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.
His research focuses on scholarly communication, research evaluation systems, scientometrics, multilingual publishing, and predatory publishing. He is actively engaged in science policy, having chaired ENRESSH (2016–2020), co-founded the Helsinki Initiative on Multilingualism (2019), and co-chaired CoARA’s Working Group on Language Biases (2023–2025).
