Developing a classification of interdisciplinary research fields for the „Research Core Dataset“

Start of the project: 2020-Jan-01 - End of the project: 2020-Dec-31

Grant Agreement Nr. KDSFF2020B

In 2016, the German Council of Science and Humanities issued recommendations on the so-called “Research Core Dataset” (RCD) for the German science system. The RCD is a set of definitions for the standardized reporting and processing of research information by universities and non-university research institutions (i.e. information on research staff, projects, publications etc.). The science council also recommended the development of a so-called list of fields of research to enable the reporting of interdisciplinary, issue- or problem-related research.

The project focuses on the intellectual development of such a classification of research fields to be included in the RCD specification. The development process includes the consultation of relevant stakeholders of the German science system and potential users of the classification. In addition, the project develops recommendations for the integration of the classification into the RCD specification. This in includes the formulation of specific classification rules.

Abstract

Research classifications are essential for the reporting and evaluation of research. As part of R&D statistics, disciplinary classifications have become crucial elements of CRIS systems and the processing of research information. Recently, the German RCD standard (short for Research Core Dataset) has been complemented by a newly developed classification to represent “fields of research” in addition to disciplinary classifications. From this perspective, research fields focus on interdisciplinary, issue- or problem-related research. The presentation provided an overview of the recently completed project to develop a classification for research fields, the project’s context, its methodological approach and results.
