Feasibility Studies

Start of the project: 2009-Jan-01 - End of the project: 2010-Dec-31

German Council of Science and Humanities

iFQ is conducting a feasibility study on the use of bibliometric indicators within the framework of the enhancement of ”Rankings in the system of higher education and research” of the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat). The objective is to assess to what extent publications and patent registrations from professors in the field of electrical engineering are covered and can be identified in special databases, as well as to identify methodological problems arising when bibliometric analyses are used.

Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW)

The objective of the project is to develop a method for the identification and delineation of fields of research by means of keywords. Using genetic engineering as an example, a new approach combining expert knowledge and semantic analysis is explored. With this approach, relevant articles in scholarly journals and literature databases in the research field of genetic engineering shall be identified. To this end, the conjoined word-pairs in titles and abstracts in six specific journals were determined and subsequently the insignificant pairs were eliminated. The herewith generated list of word-pairs will be examined by experts in genetic engineering in order to identify the relevant keywords.
