Support for continued data collection and analysis concerning mobility patterns and career paths of researchers (MORE2)

Start of the project: 2011-Nov-30 - End of the project: 2013-May-31

With the aim of attracting and training young people to become researchers and offer the graduates enough possibilities to pursue internationally competitive research careers a variety of measures have been implemented by the European Commission and the Member States. Detailed information on the mobility patterns and career paths of EU researchers was gathered in a first study on – Mobility Patterns and Career Paths of EU Researchers (MORE-I) built upon the approach taken in MORE aiming to provide internationally comparable data, indicators and analysis in order to support further evidence-based policy development on the research profession at European and national level. Central to this study was the analysis of the researchers' mobility patterns, their motives to become mobile, the influencing factors of their mobility decision and their career paths.

In order to achieve the project within MORE2 we:

  1. Conducted a survey of researchers currently working in Europe at higher education institutions (HEI) regarding their mobility patterns, career paths and working conditions (WP1)
  2. Conducted a survey of researchers currently working outside Europe regarding their mobility patterns, career paths and working conditions (WP2)
  3. Carried out a case study on the working conditions and career paths of early career researchers in selected countries (WP3)
  4. Carried out a case study on the remuneration of researchers in selected countries (WP4)
  5. Developed and produced a set of internationally-comparable indicators on stocks, flows, working conditions and career paths of European researchers (WP5)

Results have been presented in a number of reports. The final report provides a comparative, policy-relevant analysis of the mobility patterns, working conditions and career paths of European researchers (WP6).

The project was financed by the European Commission, DG Research. It was carried out by an international consortium coordinated by IDEA Consult, Brussels. iFQ was in charge of Work package 3 (WP3) the case study on working conditions and career paths of early career researchers.
