Aims and Topics
The Covid-19 pandemic has changed higher education in numerous ways. Not only do faculties face new challenges, but the pandemic also affected various aspects of students’ academic and social life: School leavers, for example, may have postponed university entrance or experienced particular difficulties when starting at a university in (partial or total) lockdown. Also, integration into the university is difficult when learning and teaching is largely remote and certain forms of learning such as study groups are not available. As many students lost their jobs during the first wave of the pandemic, a number of them have also experienced financial hardships, which can affect academic success. Such factors may lead to an increase in dropout. And those who successfully finished their degree may find themselves facing an altered labour market, as the pandemic has had detrimental effects on certain sectors, while creating an increased demand in others. Apart from Covid-related topics the conference addresses also more general aspects of “Higher Education and the Labour Market” such as the transition from university to the labour market, returns to academic education, gender and income.
