Sabrina Petersohn studied sociology, political sciences and public law at the University of Potsdam. Previously, she worked at the GESIS Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences and the University of Wuppertal from 2012 to 2017. Here she was partly responsible for the project “BibPro: The changing nature of research assessment: The institutionalization of bibliometrics as a scientific field and professionalization as an expert field” . In the course of the project she completed her dissertation on the topic of the professionalization of bibliometrics from the perspective of different users of bibliometric expertise, such as academic librarians, expert organizations or research managers. In April 2017 Sabrina started working at the DZHW in different projects. Next to supporting the “Research Core Dataset Helpdesk” she led the BMBF funded project BERTI “New professional roles? Competencies and task profiles in IT-supported research reporting”. As of May 2023 Sabrina took up the role of scientific advisor at the office of the Commission for Research Information in Germany which is located at the DZHW.

Abstract

Heterogeneous reporting requirements and increasing expectations of strategic capacity building have prompted German research institutions to implement advanced database and information systems in order to improve their management of metadata on research activities, processes and outcomes (research information). Implementation and use of these systems in research reporting require specific expertise, opening up new task areas which have so far not been sufficiently studied. Based on a national survey among personnel responsible for IT-based research reporting in German Higher Education and research institutions, the contribution assesses whether research information management constitutes a new specialization in research management.

Abstract

Since the 2000s, the digitization of bibliometric infrastructure has accelerated at a rapid pace. In this article, we analyse how these developments in evaluative bibliometrics have contributed to an extension of indicator-based research evaluation towards data-driven research analytics. Drawing on empirical material from blogs and websites as well as from research and policy papers, we discuss how interoperability, scalability, and flexibility as material specificities of digital infrastructures generate new ways of data production and their assessment, which affect the possibilities of how academic performance can be understood and (e)valuated.

‘I want to be able to do what I know the tools will allow us to do’: Practicing evaluative bibliometrics through digital infrastructure. Research Evaluation (online first).
Abstract

The proliferation of quantitative research assessment has been accompanied by an increasing growth and diversification of digital infrastructure for evaluative bibliometrics. Since the beginning of the 2000s, insights into academic performance provided by a variety of new databases and devices significantly exceed the capacities of the former Science Citation Index and embedded metrics. Going beyond the research on the construction, uses, and consequences of bibliometric indicators, we therefore posit that a perspective on bibliometric infrastructure is crucial for understanding how evaluative bibliometrics is put into practice.

Informationsmanagerin gesucht – Die Rolle wissenschaftlicher Bibliotheken in der Forschungsberichterstattung in Deutschland. ABI Technik, 42(1), 70-77.
Abstract

Whilst libraries have already developed new specializations as curators of research data, we ask which role the collection and processing of research information will play as a research support service in academic libraries and how this affects their task and competency profiles in the future. Based on an analysis of job advertisements for the years 2005 to 2020 and an online survey, we identify formal tasks and competency requirements as well as current task profiles and perceived areas of competency.

The Competent Bibliometrician–A Guided Tour through the Scholarly and Practitioner Literature. In Ball, R. (Hrsg.), Handbook Bibliometrics (S. 485-496). Berlin, Boston: De Gruyter Saur.
Abstract

Repeated calls for responsible research metrics and professional codes of conduct in evaluative bibliometrics highlight the need to investigate which qualifications and competencies enable a proficient application of bibliometric methods and indicators. Taking competence research as a point of departure, this chapter delineates salient dimensions of professional competence in bibliometric research evaluation by reviewing a selected subset of the literature. The reviewed literature focuses on handbooks, monographs, and scholarly and practitioner articles that introduce theory and methodology of bibliometrics and showcase applications to scholars and practitioners mainly outside of the scientometric research community.

Abstract

The datafication of science and its algorithmic assessment are accelerating at a rapid pace. The panel invites contributions that (1) address how these data and data analytics affect research and researchers, (2) discuss data politics regarding access, ownership, and questions of data protection, (3) investigate how the rationales and functionalities of data analytics influence evaluation practices, or (4) focus on the marketization and assetization of data on research and researchers within and beyond academia.

Abstract

Since the 2000s, the digitization of bibliometric infrastructure has accelerated at a rapid pace. Citation databases are indexing an increasing variety of publication types. Altmetric data aggregators are producing data on the reception of research outcomes. Machine-readable persistent identifiers are created to unambiguously identify researchers, research organizations, and research objects and evaluative software tools and current research information systems are constantly enlarging their functionalities to extract meaning from data. In our presentation, we analyze how these developments in evaluative bibliometrics have contributed to an extension of indicator-based research evaluation to research analytics

Session Professional competencies in evaluative bibliometrics. auf der Konferenz 25th International Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators, STI 2021, Danish Centre for Studies in Research and Research Policy Department of Political Science Aarhus University , Aarhus, Denmark.
Abstract

The session sets forth to inquire more deeply into the nature of professional competence in evaluative bibliometrics. Taking competence research as a departure we discuss three competency dimensions and their interrelations for the domain of bibliometric research assessment. We will also ask whether professional competence in evaluative bibliometrics differs according to specific user perspectives and application as well as policy settings.
